“Wireless LAN card not detected” – AirMagnet Survey & Wifi Analyzer

Below are several possible fixes when receiving this error message “Wireless LAN card not detected” when starting the AirMagnet application


• Ensure the adapter can connect to the wireless network prior to starting the AirMagnet application 
    o If the adapter cannot connect to the wireless network, this may be a hardware or configuration issue 
    o please work with your local IT group to resolve this

• You must have admin rights to install the driver and application 
    o Login with admin rights 
    o Or right-click on the install, select “Run as admin” 
    o Also select “Run as admin” when starting the application

• Check to make sure the adapter is supported by the AirMagnet application
    o http://airmagnet.flukenetworks.com/support/supported_adapters  

• Download and install the supported driver: 
    o http://airmagnet.flukenetworks.com/my_airmagnet/public/documents/#3rdpartydriver  
         Click on "3rd Party vendor software package/driver/datasheet" 
         Select the appropriate driver for the adapter and OS 
         There is only one driver for all the USB adapters 
                • Use the first download for the multi-adapter kit 
                • Use the second download for a single USB adapter: "802.11a/b/g/n USB adapter drivers" 
         Note: the Intel 6200/6300 adapters do not require a specific driver, any driver from the manufacturer is supported


• Turn off Windows Firewall

• Turn off Anti-virus

• Uninstall any wireless Client Utility from add/remove programs, such as Intel ProSet or D-Link
    o The AirMagnet application uses Windows Wireless Zero Config to configure the adapter 
    o All other Client Utilities are not supported


• Bring up a command prompt, run “ipconfig /all” 
    o Does the adapter appear in this list? 
    o There may be a policy on the laptop that does not allow a wireless adapter enabled at the same time as the ethernet adapter 
         Unplug the ethernet cable 
    o Check the “WLAN AutoConfig” service is started: 
         Right click on MyComputer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services 
         Scroll down to “WLAN AutoConfig” 
         If not started, right-click > Properties 
                • Select “Automatic” in the dropdown 
                • Click “Start” 
                • Click “OK”


• Check that the “Airmagnet” protocol has been installed on the adapter: 
    o Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > change adapter settings 
         Right-click on the adapter > Properties 
                • Check for the “AirMagnet Analyzer Protocol” and that it is checked 
                • If the AirMagnet Protocol is not there, install the protocol: 
                        o Click the “Install” button 
                        o Click “Protocol” then “Add” button 
                        o Click “Have Disk” 
                        o Click “Browse” 
                        o Navigate to c:\program files\airmagnet inc\airmagnet surveyor\AMSYMBAG.INF 
                             Click “Open” > OK > OK 
                        o Check to make sure the “AirMagnet” protocol appears in the list and is checked 
                        o Click “Close”


• In the same protocol list above, uncheck any protocol except the following
    o Client for Microsoft Networks 
    o QoS Packet Scheduler 
    o File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks 
    o AirMagnet Analyzer Protocol 
    o Internet Protocol Version 6  (optional)
    o Internet Protocol Version 4 
    o Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver 
    o Link-layer Topology Discovery Responder


• If the AirMagnet protocol is there and the error persists, please uninstall & reinstall the wireless driver program and adapter: 
    o From Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the “Atheros Client Installation Program” (for USB adapters only)
    o Then uninstall the adapter from Device Manager: 
            • Right-click MyComputer > Manage > Device Manager > Network Adapters 
            • unplug the adapter and reboot 
            • Plug the adapter into a different USB port 
            • download the supported driver from your MyAirMagnet account and reinstall the adapter: 
                    http://airmagnet.flukenetworks.com/my_airmagnet/public/documents/#3rdpartydriver  



• Check for the correct driver in Device Manager: 
    o Right click on MyComputer > Manage > Device Manager > Network Adapters (or maybe under "Other") 
    o Right click on the USB wifi adapter > Properties 
         “Driver” tab – version should be 13.1.0.114 
         “Driver Details” button – should have the following driver: 
                C:\windows\system32\drivers\arusb_lh.sys (for Windows 7, 32-bit OS) 
                C:\windows\system32\drivers\arusb_lhx.sys (for Windows 7, 64-bit OS) 
                C:\windows\system32\drivers\arusb.sys (for XP SP3, 32-bit OS) 

        If the driver is not correct, contact tech support for the necessary driver, 32-bit or 64-bit 
            • Download the driver .zip file to your Desktop and extract 

         Click "Ok" to go back to the “Driver” tab 
            • “Update Driver” button 
            • “Browse my computer for driver software” 
            • “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer” 
            • “Have Disk” 
            • “browse…” button 
            • Navigate to the driver saved on your desktop then “Open” 
            • “Next” 
         Check the “Driver Details” button again to ensure the “arusb_lh.sys” driver is listed



• Try a different USB port on the laptop


• The application may have been installed in XP compatibility mode on a Windows 7 system. Registry keys will need to be deleted when this happens: 
    o To check for compatibility mode, run “regedit”: 
         Start > regedit 
            • Delete the following keys if found: 
                o HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers (delete any AirMagnet entries) 
                o HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers (delete AirMagnet entries) 
         Reboot

• Delete any unnecessary driver in the registry: 
    o HKey_Local_Machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\arusb win7 or arusb atheros (delete these folders) 
         Delete any “arusb” driver EXCEPT the following: 
                • "arusb" - for windows XP SP3 
                • "arusb_lh" - for windows 7 32-bit 
                • "arusb_lhx" - for windows 7 64-bit


• Check for the following software on the laptop and stop these services: 
    o “Cisco Secure Services Client” 
    o “Automatic protection system” - Lenovo Thinkpads and Dell laptops
